Toyota Mobility Foundation seeks European regions for hydrogen programme — applications open until 31 July

The Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF) launches the European Hydrogen Regions Initiative with an open call for European regions, cities and stakeholders. The application deadline is 31 July 2026 at h2regions.eu/TMF.

What does the initiative involve?

TMF selects up to five European regions that are already developing local hydrogen ecosystems but face concrete barriers to further progress. The foundation does not provide funding, but offers structured technical guidance, support in building integrated hydrogen value chains — from production and distribution to mobility applications — and access to a European network of hydrogen partners.

The focus is on regions that can become self-sustaining after support, without ongoing external dependency. TMF gives priority to projects with demonstrable local impact and clear potential for replication in other regions.

The approach is collaborative and regionally driven. Selected regions work closely with regional and local authorities, industry stakeholders, mobility operators, civil society and academia.

Who implements the programme?

TMF appoints Berlin-based consultancy Spilett GmbH as implementing partner. Spilett specialises in the hydrogen economy and energy transition and has an established track record of collaboration with TMF, including through the H2Scout tool for data-driven planning and optimisation of hydrogen value chains. Spilett assesses candidate regions, supports the selection process and contributes to designing integrated regional ecosystems.

Why relevant for the Netherlands and Belgium?

The initiative explicitly targets regions that are already in motion but have stalled. That profile fits several Dutch and Belgian regions investing in hydrogen infrastructure but held back by grid congestion, permitting timelines or the absence of a critical mass of supply and demand simultaneously.

Regions or organisations interested in exploring eligibility can submit an application until 31 July at h2regions.eu/TMF.

Background: Toyota Mobility Foundation

The Toyota Mobility Foundation was established in 2014 by Toyota Motor Corporation with the aim of contributing to a more inclusive and sustainable mobility society. TMF works with governments, universities, non-profits and research institutions in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
