Goeree-Overflakkee Becomes a Hydrogen Hub: Van Kessel's Electrolyser in Oude-Tonge Is Running
Van Kessel Announces Milestone: Electrolyser in Oude-Tonge Is Running
Dutch family business Van Kessel Olie has announced that the green hydrogen production electrolyser in Oude-Tonge, on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee, has completed extensive trial operation. Commercial commissioning is now imminent, with certification currently underway.
The electrolyser is a 1 MW AEM Multicore system from German-Italian manufacturer Enapter, realised in collaboration with Adsensys H2 Solutions from Klundert. The installation is capable of producing approximately 160,000 kg of green hydrogen per year — enough to supply roughly twenty to twenty-five heavy trucks or buses with fuel for an entire year.
Production, Refuelling and Distribution on One Site
The choice of Oude-Tonge is strategic. The electrolyser sits directly adjacent to the Greenpoint Clean Energy Hub hydrogen refuelling station on the N59, which Van Kessel opened in February 2024. Part of the hydrogen produced can therefore be dispensed immediately on-site to passing hydrogen vehicles.
At the same time, the location includes loading bays for tube trailers — specialised high-pressure tankers used to transport hydrogen to other refuelling stations, construction sites and industrial customers. Oude-Tonge thereby becomes not merely a single filling station, but a fully integrated hydrogen hub combining production, distribution and dispensing on one site.
Green Power from Canopy Solar Panels
The electrolyser is powered by green electricity, partly generated by solar panels mounted on the canopies of the adjacent refuelling station. This makes the chain compact and local: solar energy produces electricity, which splits water into hydrogen and oxygen, and the hydrogen goes directly into the tank of a vehicle or tube trailer.
The project received co-funding from the European Union and support through the Dutch OWE programme for large-scale production of fully renewable hydrogen via electrolysis.
Second Production Site, Built on Proven Experience
Oude-Tonge is Van Kessel's second own hydrogen production location. The first was in Nieuwegein, where the company, together with Hysolar, commissioned a 2.5 MW electrolyser — officially opened by King Willem-Alexander. The knowledge and operational experience gained in Nieuwegein has made the startup in Oude-Tonge faster and smoother.
Van Kessel now operates three hydrogen refuelling stations under the Greenpoint network, with concrete plans for further expansion at logistics hubs in Ede, Sliedrecht, Zeewolde and elsewhere in the Netherlands. The company is positioning itself as an increasingly vertically integrated player in the Dutch hydrogen chain: from production through storage and distribution to the pump.
