Hynergy puts the BMW iX5 Hydrogen to work

From demo fleet to everyday use

Germany's Hynergy, a specialist in building hydrogen infrastructure, has a notable addition to its fleet: the BMW iX5 Hydrogen. The company is now driving the 2026 demo-fleet version of this fuel-cell SUV, in an eye-catching 'Art Basel' finish, underlining its own hydrogen message.


What can the iX5 Hydrogen do?

The iX5 Hydrogen pairs the roomy body of the familiar BMW X5 with a fully electric drivetrain that draws its power from a fuel cell. The key figures:


  • 400 hp and 700 Nm of instantly available torque
  • hydrogen stored at 700 bar
  • more than 400 km of range
  • refuelling in a few minutes, just like a petrol car


Green hydrogen from Bavaria

Hynergy fuels the car with 100% green hydrogen from its own Bavarian production. According to the company, this brings the well-to-wheel footprint to 0.9 kg CO2 per kilogram of hydrogen, which works out to less than 15 grams of CO2 per kilometre. That makes even a generously sized SUV strikingly clean on the road.


The hydrogen comes in part from the electrolyser in Pfeffenhausen, which recently began supplying green hydrogen. From early 2027, Hynergy plans to build several new hydrogen stations, starting with Pfeffenhausen, at a price below 9 euros per kilogram (net). That would make driving on hydrogen cheaper than on petrol or diesel: around 10 euros per 100 kilometres for the sizeable iX5 Hydrogen.


2028: BMW's first series-produced hydrogen car

The demo car is a taste of what's coming. In 2028 BMW intends to put the new iX5 Hydrogen into series production, Germany's first fuel-cell car off the line. At its heart is a third-generation fuel cell, developed together with Toyota and more compact and efficient than its predecessor. Notably, the X5 will then be available with five drivetrains: battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, petrol, diesel and hydrogen.


Why it matters

Here hydrogen shows what it can add alongside the battery: a large, heavy SUV that refuels quickly, covers over 400 kilometres and still drives with almost no emissions. We see it as a fine example of freedom of choice in zero-emission driving, with regional green hydrogen as the finishing piece. And the less weight a vehicle has to carry, the less energy it takes to get it moving; for large, heavy applications that is an attractive route.
