From racetrack to reality: Toyota showcases hydrogen innovation at Le Mans 2026
Hydrogen was firmly in the spotlight at the 2026 24 Hours of Le Mans. The classic drew a record of more than 350,000 visitors, and Toyota used that stage to show how hydrogen technology is moving from the racetrack to everyday reality. To do so, the manufacturer has been working since 2022 with the organiser, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO).
A first: a racing car on liquid hydrogen
The highlight was the first public demonstration of the TR LH2 Racing Prototype, a racing car with a combustion engine running on liquid hydrogen (LH2). Three-time Le Mans winner Kazuki Nakajima drove it around the Circuit de la Sarthe on 11 June 2026. The car shares its chassis with the TR010 Hybrid Hypercar that Toyota races in the 24 Hours, and uses liquid hydrogen — a step beyond the earlier gaseous-hydrogen prototypes. In this way Toyota shows that the hydrogen combustion engine is a complementary pathway: racing performance and driving emotion, sound included, but with zero tailpipe emissions.
Hydrogen around the race, too
Hydrogen played a role beyond the track as well. The Moving e fuel cell bus provided quiet transport for the Toyota racing team during scrutineering. And a Hyliko truck powered by Toyota fuel cells carried the race cars to the centre of Le Mans for inspection — according to Toyota a first for hydrogen-powered heavy-duty logistics.
Making hydrogen tangible
At the Hydrogen Village, visitors could experience the technology for themselves. Interest was high; at peak times demand exceeded capacity. One of the most popular attractions was a karaoke set-up running on power from the Moving e fuel cell bus — a simple, tangible demonstration of hydrogen power in everyday use. Toyota also displayed, among other things:
- the Hyliko fuel cell truck, with its cab raised to show the fuel cell modules;
- the third-generation fuel cell stack;
- a Hiace with a hydrogen combustion engine;
- a Mirai cutaway explaining how a fuel cell car works;
- a hydrogen generator (EODev GEH2) for quiet, zero-emission power.
Through an on-site survey of more than 1,000 visitors, among other things, Toyota gauged how well the public understands hydrogen.
We see this as a fine example of how hydrogen becomes visible and understandable. From the racetrack to the logistics around it and the explanations for the public: with its broad approach, Toyota shows that hydrogen, alongside battery-electric, already works in many places today — from passenger car to heavy truck.
